Accounting Is Killing the Environment

It saddens me to be a part of this. I hate how much paper is wasted for accounting purposes. For auditing purposes we apparently have to print anything and everything. And most of it is just "in case" they want to see it, then it's there. That information never changes. It's history, it's on a system/program, it's archived.

Is it not okay for me to print what's necessary, then provide when they ask for further detail? I will show them what they need. They can even watch me as I get it on my computer screen. It should be sufficient to only print what they need. I know it's all to ensure we are making it evident that we are not crooking the books in any way, but seriously?

If that is the case then why is a list of all accounts entries not good enough? Why do they have to see every single account's data separately and each on a new page? All the information is there. It's all in order. I'm not mucking about! Is it that much effort to scroll through a list and stop when you find that section you need? Have another query? Then go further down the same page and all the information is still right there!!! I think this is a smart way of providing all the information they "may need."

This is what you want don't you?

No, sadly, I have been told that we don't work in a paperless environment. Could you at least get me recycled paper then, you know, so I don't feel like I am aiding to the end of the world? Who do I have to speak to to get someone to care??? I mean if that was my boss talking, and people can't even recycle office garbage when there are clearly labeled bins right next to each other. If they can't comply to that, how can I expect them to care about wasting paper.

And now that I'm at it, those bins are just for show aren't they? If someone was actually "recycling" the stuff, wouldn't they complain about the leftover lunch thrown in the paper or the tin & plastic bin? No, clearly I work in an environment that doesn't really care. And this workplace will remain nameless, not just because, God forbid, they sue me for feeling this way, but also because I have heard that the same happens elsewhere.

I am sure I am not the only person who works in an office that has recycle bins right next to each other, yet people don't comply. Or you, individually, comply only to find that there is a whole bunch of other sh!t in that bin that's not supposed to be there. Who do you complain to? No one seems to know.

I am sure that there are a sh!tload of files, that never get looked at, all over your offices too. So no, I guess I can't blame workplace alone. No, I can at least blame accounting. Or at least auditing. Seriously, you can audit the sh!t out of everything, you really don't need to see twenty different versions of the same data on paper. Original documents such as invoices, yes. Understandable, I will gladly get those filed away for you. But data... data??? How about I email that to you instead? I mean f*ck, I can give you 100% of the data, you are only going to randomly select like 5% of everything to audit anyway.

I'm not being unreasonable. I'm just thinking of the planet.
